Oktoberfest

Meine Freunde! Ich bin ins Deutsche übersetzt!

Fall has sprung (what?) and that means that the beer volcanoes are almost ready for harvest (what?) and the German people and anyone with a taste for beer is unpacking the lederhosen (what?). Oktoberfest is here! In which we celebrate the miracle of the harvest season and our communion with each other and with the land by solemnly overindulging in Pabst Blue Ribbon and passing out on the nearest frat couch.

To mark the occasion in our own little way, who’s up for a meetup? Yes, yes we thought you might.

WHEN
Wednesday, October 12th, 19h30

WHERE
Brasserie Artisanale l’Amère à Boire, 2049 rue Saint-Denis, 3rd floor

WHAT
Note the change of date! Once again, we’re pushing the meetup back a week to accommodate this month’s awesome speaker—Doug Wilson, of the Copenhagen Game Collective! The CGC has been doing some really amazing stuff, with games like B.U.T.T.O.N., Johann Sebastian Joust, and F*ck You, It’s Art turning heads among players and designers alike. Doug will be on hand and hilariously jet-lagged to talk about his own experiences and projects within the group. It’s an Oktoberfest miracle!

O’zapft is!

Meetup reminder!

Amidst the hububblebobble of our Amazing Arcade Announcement (because we’re triple-AAAwesome), let us not forget our everymonth responsibilities!

The September Shindig is this Wednesday, September 14th, 19h30! At our usual haunt—l’Amère à Boire, 2049 rue Saint-Denis, 3rd floor! But you knew that already!

That which you did not know, presumably, is our lineup. Since we’re trying to tack more towards an alternation of demo nights and presentations, we’re starting things off in style with three sweet titles.

  • Bratwurst Breakin’ — Stephen Ascher brings poppin’ and lockin’ to the cutthroat world of processed meatstuffs.
  • Her Majesty’s Royal Space Armada — Kenny Backus earns top marks for nomenclature and bonus marks for holy hamburgers we want to play this.
  • Wizorb — Newly-formed Tribute Games throw some block-breaking beats into a blender with certain NES RPG’s and cook up something delicious.

Videos below! Be there! Wednesday! The most interestingly-spelt day of the week!

Arcade Royale: Call for Submissions

Alright cats and kittens, the time has come.

Word on the street is that indie arcade cabs are pretty much the coolest. People (real people) have been clamouring for A Cab Of Our Own—and well, we say, clamour no longour! We hereby announce:

ARCADE ROYALE

Say it. Taste it. Roll it around in the glass. Accidentally drip a bit of it on the tablecloth, and cover it with salt so it doesn’t stain. Oh that’s fresh.

We have spoken with local hardware hackers The Buttonmashers, who are at this very second devising beautiful things for a beautiful cab (peep the work-in-progress pictures, the last four or so here). Suffice it to say, this could look heavenly.

We have the hardware, now we need the games.

Your games.

We’re looking for: 4-6 titles from local Montreal developers—and perhaps a few special features from abroad—that are ready for awesome-sweet arcade parties. More submissions == a more delicious Royale. Needless to say, this is a FOUR-PLAYER CAB, and we’re most interested in games that take advantage of the affordances that offers! That said, we’re also totally interested in seeing creative uses of this control configuration. If you see those four joysticks as dual sets of twin sticks for two-player terror: GO FOR IT. If you think those four-button arrangements would work curiously well as directional controls: GO FOR IT. If you are convinced that the entire set of controls is just a rough stand-in for an unfathomable, alien control panel that drives devices of eldritch power: for the love of all things holy, GO FOR IT. (And then maybe talk to your therapist about those strange dreams you’re having.)

You have what it takes believe in yourself.

Ideas? Questions? Give us a shout by email or in the comments down below, and let’s make some happy.
